Why would you ever stay small?
Or crawl into your cave to stay away?
Your voice holds a formula, a song,
we have never heard before.
Don’t hold back what is uniquely yours–
don’t tarnish or devalue your craft.
You are everything needed
to flourish in the space which you’re a part of.
So please, don’t evade. You are
more than qualified to simply be yourself.
Something inside me broke–
and it’s been a gathering of shards and scraps since.
I’ve been holding the pieces to my chest
asking God for it to be fixed.
But maybe the shards of glass are just sand
and they’re meant to blow away with the wind.
Perhaps what was broken was intentionally finished
so I may receive what God wants to give.
She received the book,
and it was bound in a lattice cloth
with her name woven at the top.
Inside: you are still the person that I love.
Outside: a beating heart,
a thrown-off start
This is for you.
And she ate up all the pages,
all the insane inscriptions, cursive letters,
pictures and stories
pouring out like a deep breath–
they wrote out all the things she’s ever felt or said
from the very beginning of memory.
The book: you have been connected from the start–
you, and all the untouched that you guard.
So this is for you.
If it was all somehow collected and packaged up
to be given to you like a gift,
it would arrive to you like this.
